Student Exchange Programme (SEP)

This popular option lets you experience independent living and learning in a different culture for a semester (or two). NUS Engineering has over 100 partner universities, including premier institutions, such as the University of California, Imperial College London, University of Tokyo and Tsinghua University. Furthermore, we are the only engineering school in the world to have exchanges with both Cambridge and Oxford universities.

SEP typically takes place in Year 3, although application and selection occurs a year in advance. You must design your own study plan by mapping modules at your intended exchange university to equivalent modules in your programme’s curriculum. However, the grades you obtain while on SEP are not included in the calculation of your CAP, and credits are transferred on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory basis.

Oxbridge SEP

NUS Engineering is the only university in the world to have student exchanges with both Universities of Oxford and Cambridge (Oxbridge). The year-long programme at Oxbridge offers an unparalleled experience at two of the world’s oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher learning. Application to the Oxbridge exchange is by invitation only, and only short-listed applicants would be interviewed.

International Summer (& Winter) Programmes (i-SP)

Coinciding with the NUS vacations, these shorter overseas programmes still immerse you in a foreign environment while you earn credits without affecting your regular academic schedule. Just as with SEP, you would need to prepare a study plan by mapping relevant modules.

Several universities in non-English-speaking countries offer exclusive programmes in English to international students, so do explore the options in such countries.

NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC)

NOC is a global internship and learning experience unique to NUS: you are thrown into the frenzy of a technology start-up at one of the hottest entrepreneurial hubs around the world, while juggling modules at a top university located nearby. Competition for this life-changing opportunity is keen, but if you are an E-Scholar, you are automatically enrolled in a 6-month stint at an NOC*. The entrepreneurship education of NOC is also recommended if you are pursing the second major in Innovation and Design (iDP). NOC will fulfil the compulsory internship requirement in our BEng programmes.

* At NOC locations that offer a 6-month programme.

Other Global Experiences

A number of other overseas opportunities, such as research attachments and short study trips are available from the NUS Global Relations Office. Global internships are sometimes offered through the Centre for Future-Ready Graduates.

Financing Your Overseas Learning

NUS offers bursaries, awards and loans to help defray part of the costs of studying abroad.
