TAN, Woei Wan

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

Vice-Dean, School of Continuing And Lifelong Education (SCALE)

Woei Wan Tan graduated with the Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical, Honours) degree and the Master of Engineering degree from the National University of Singapore in 1993 and 1995 respectively. After earning the Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Oxford for her work on self-learning neurofuzzy control of nonlinear systems in December 1997, she joined the National University of Singapore where she is now an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering. She is also serving as the Vice-Dean for e-Learning and Technology at the School for Continuing and Lifelong Education (SCALE).

Her research interests are in the areas of systems science and computational intelligence. In recent years, she has focused on theoretical development of type-2 fuzzy systems, and the application of type-2 fuzzy systems to intelligent modelling, control and fault diagnosis. Research accolades include the FUZZ-IEEE 2005 Best Student Paper Award and FUZZ-IEEE 2006 Best Poster Presentation Award. Dr Tan is also an active member of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE). She has served or is serving on the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) Fuzzy Systems Technical Committee, IEEE Women in Computational Intelligence Committee, IEEE CIS Emergent Technologies Technical Committee, IEEE CIS Graduate Student Research Grants Committee, IEEE CIS Distinguished Lecturers Programme Committee and many conference technical programme committees. Besides research, she is a passionate educator. She mainly teaches core modules at the undergraduate level, and her commitment to teaching has been consistently recognized by Teaching Awards.
