- Monash University Postgraduate Scholarship for Ph.D. from 1978 to 1981; Postgraduate Scholarship for M.Tech. from 1974 to 1976; National Merit Scholarship for B.Tech. from 1968 to 1973.
- Selected as one of the NUS Excellent Teachers in 2002/03, 2003/04, 2004/05 and 2005/06 (i.e., in the top ~ 5% of more than 2000 faculty members at NUS).
- Placed on the Annual Teaching Excellence Awards: Honour Roll in recognition of sustained excellence in teaching.
- Received “Certificate of Excellence for Most Cited Authors” from the Chemical Engineering Research & Design in 2011.
- Many undergraduates supervised by me have received awards in competitions and/or published journal papers.

- Process Systems Engineering covering modeling, optimization and control of chemical and bio-systems
- Current focus on multi-objective optimization techniques and applications to design, intensification and retrofitting/revamping of chemical and related processes
