Q:
|
When is the IA conducted?
|
|
A:
|
There are 2 IA periods each year,
January to June (for all Engineering disciplines)& July to December
(for Chemical Engineering only).
Faculty IA registration for
students will take place around October for the following January to
June batch and March for the July to December batch in the same
year. The Dean's Office will announce to all Stage 3 students via
the NUS email 1-2 weeks before the exact registration period.
Self-Initiated IA registration
(for both local & overseas)is on-going throughout the year. You will
register online once you found an IA company. You may only begin
your IA after receiving approval from Dept IA coordinator.

Q: |
When a
student is on 24 weeks IA, does he/she need to
pay the University Tuition Fee?
|
|
A:
|
Industrial
Attachment is an integral part of the engineering curriculum.
Although students will not attend lectures and tutorials on campus
during the attachment period, they are given formal credits for this
as part of the overall requirement. When students are claiming
credits as part of the curriculum, they need to register with the
university and pay the tuition fees for that credit to be formally
recognized.
In charging
tuition fees, it is not computed based on actual hours of services
students received nor facilities they actually use. It is based on
the cost of providing students with the complete education needed to
graduate, including both resource-intensive and not so
resource-intensive components, and divided among semesters.
Besides,
students on Industrial Attachment can continue to have access to the
facilities, e.g. medical, library, computer and sports facilities.
In some instances, students need to make use of such facilities
during their Industrial Attachment.
In
contrast to this, students who take leave of absence from the
University to be away to start up some companies or gain industrial
experience do not need to pay tuition fees, because they will not be
entitled to any credits towards their graduation requirement.

Q: |
Can I do both VIP and IA? |
|
A:
|
No, you are only allowed to do
either VIP or IA but not both. The main objective of VIP and IA is
to expose students to industrial training. Students who have opted
for either one would have already achieved the main objective set by
the Faculty. |
|
Q: |
Can I request the
Faculty/Company to write a deferment letter if I am recalled by
MINDEF for ICT during the course of my VIP? |
|
A: |
You must go for ICT when required
by MINDEF. The company is required to release you on unpaid leave.
Unless the company requires you to make up for the days you are away
for ICT, you need not do so.
You are required to state in the
Student Log Sheet for the particular week you are scheduled for ICT.
Your supervisor in the company is required to sign the Student Log
Sheet to acknowledge that you are scheduled for ICT.

Q: |
My IA
company requests for an indemnity letter from the school. Who
should I approach to get hold of the letter? |
|
A: |
As long as students are going for
internships and NUS is informed, companies will be indemnified. The
Letter of Indemnity relates to the University's Public Liability
policy which covers injuries to third parties or damages to third
parties' properties. Other than NUS and the students and anybody
representing NUS, the rest are considered to be third parties.
Should the company requires a
hardcopy of the letter, please email the request, together with your
full name, NRIC No, name of company and internship period to Ms
Ratna at
engrsba@nus.edu.sg
The letter will be sent to the
IA company directly.

Q.
|
Will I be insured
for my IA?
|
|
A. |
The tuition fees paid by
students include the University Health Scheme as well as Personal
Accident Insurance. A brief summary of the coverage for the
personal accident insurance coverage include:
- 24-hr worldwide
coverage
- Death benefit:
$30,000
- Permanent
Disability: up to 150% of $30,000, depending on the disablement
- Medical expenses
relating to accidents: $5,000 per accident.
We would recommend companies to purchase additional
insurance with a higher coverage. It is
compulsory for students going for overseas IA to purchase additional
insurance with a more comprehensive coverage.
In addition, NUS has also taken up a Public Liability
Insurance Policy that will indemnify the companies against any
claims that arise out of industrial hazards and accidents.

|
Q. |
What should I do if a dispute
arises between myself and the company?
|
|
A. |
Students should immediately seek
assistance and advice from their respective dept academic advisors and
if there is a need the academic advisor shall visit the company as a
mediator to resolve the situation. At all times, students shall not
confront the company themselves and take matters into their own hands.
|
|
Q. |
Will there be a situation that I
will receive an "Unsatisfactory" grade for IA?
|
|
.A. |
Yes, there is a possibility that
students will receive an "unsatisfactory" grade for IA should any of
the scenarios listed below happen.
1. Unsatisfactory performance
feedback by the company. For example students who are always late for
work or absence without official leave.
2. Withdrawal from the company
without the consent of the University
3. Students who fail to submit
all the IA reports within the stipulated timeframe.
4. Any kind of disputes with the
company.
