Nurturing the Talent of Tomorrow

Global Education for a Globalised World For the Brightest and Best
The Global Engineering Programme (GEP) is an exclusive
programme designed to attract the very best students to
read any branch of engineering at the National
University of Singapore (NUS). Students with exceptional
potential will be provided an accelerated pathway and
enhanced educational experience that incorporates a
strong global learning aspect. The objective is to align
and nurture the particular strength of this select group
of top engineering undergraduates to be
engineer-leaders. The programme is offered to new
incoming students from Academic Year 09/10.
Key features:
• Award of two degrees:
1) Bachelor of Engineering at NUS.
2) Postgraduate degree in Engineering at a top partner
university. Graduates may have the option of continuing with doctoral studies.
• Accelerated progress: Students are exempted from
reading certain specific modules through advanced
placement credits. They can pursue self-study modules so
that they can complete their B Eng within three years
and go on to postgraduate studies in the 4th year.
• Overseas partner universities: Students will spend at
least one semester at a partner university overseas
during the undergraduate phase of the program. The 4th
year (postgraduate studies) will be spent at one of the
partner universities.
• Full NUS scholarships: GEP students may be provided
full scholarships which has no bond attached for the
duration of their undergraduate studies
• Financial support for graduate studies: If necessary,
support will be sought from external agencies to fund GEP students for their graduate studies overseas. Where
applicable, upon completion of their graduate study, the
GEP students may be required to serve for a short period
as specified by the scholarship awarding agency.
• Exposure to research: Students will be given early
exposure to research through specially-tailored
Undergraduate Research Opportunity Programmes (UROP)
within the Faculty, or research internships at a partner
local or foreign institution, such as at the Campus for
Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise
(CREATE) – a programme under the National Research
Foundation at the University Town.
• Mentoring: Students will enjoy close supervision and
mentoring by a select pool of Faculty staff.
• Special Seminars: Special seminars / talks will be
arranged for GEP students to meet, interact and be
enthused by top engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs and
renowned thinkers.
Entry into the GEP:
• Interview: The GEP will only admit students who have
been interviewed and recommended by a panel comprising selected
staff from the Faculty of Engineering at NUS.
• NUS Scholarship applicants: Students who are
interested to gain entry into the GEP must apply for the
NUS scholarship or the ASEAN Overseas Graduate
scholarship. Shortlisted candidates for such
scholarships will be invited to compete for entry into
the programme.
• By invitation: Candidates who performed extremely well
at the end of their first semester at NUS may be invited
to apply for entry into the GEP.
• Scholarship holders from other organizations: Upon request,
scholarship holders from other organizations may be considered for
entry into the GEP, subject to meeting the shortlist and interview
requirements as those stated above.
Performance & Exit:
• The mentor and the GEP committee will review progress and performance
at the end of every semester. Those who fail to maintain a good CAP will
first be given a warning. A student who subsequently fails to make the
expected improvement may be asked to leave the programme. Such student
will continue with the regular BEng programme.
Graduate study:
• GEP students shall apply for admission into the
graduate programme at a partner university in Year 3, in
consultation with their respective mentor.
• The Faculty of Engineering is working with various
government agencies (including A*STAR, DSTA, etc) to
offer full scholarships for the postgraduate phase.
Students sponsored by these agencies during the
postgraduate phase may be required to serve for a short
bond as specified by the funding agency.
