FAQs about the Engineering Curriculum and Requirements

  • Does the faculty allow exemption for students who have obtained an 'A' in Physics or Maths at G.C.E. 'A' levels?
As the modules offered at the university are of a higher level, no exemptions will be given.

  • When must I complete my University Requirements?
You may complete it any time within your 8 semesters.

  • I am required to take the English module, EG1471 English for Academic Purposes (Engineering). Does it mean that I have to pass this module before I can take EG1413 Critical Thinking and Writing?
Yes, you will have to pass EG1471 before embarking on EG1413. EG1471 is a pre-requisite module for EG1413.
  • I notice that EG1471 does not carry any MCs. Does this mean the result of this module will not influence my CAP and honors classification?
EG1471 carries zero MCs and it will not affect your CAP and honors classification. However, you must pass the module before you can graduate.

  • I have registered for a Breadth which is cross-listed as a Singapore Studies (SS) module. Can I convert the module into a SS instead?
No, you cannot, because there are different quota for GEMs and CFMs. This applies for conversion between cross-listed SS and GEMs.
  • I have registered for a ULR Breadth which is cross-listed as a General Education Module (GEM/GEK). Can I convert the module into a GEM/GEK instead?
No. You need to bid for the module with GEK/GEM code during CORS. Conversion of a module type after CORS is not permitted.
  • Are students given a grade or satisfactory/unsatisfactory for retake modules?
If the retake module is a core engineering module, then you will be given a grade because all core engineering modules are offered on graded basis. If the module that you are retaking is a ULR module (GEM, Breadth, SS or UEM), then you may choose to retake on S/U basis, but this is also provided you have not consumed the maximum number of MCs allowed by the University.

  • I wish to extend beyond 4 years' of study to do extra modules even though I have fulfilled all my B.Eng. requirements. Is this possible?
Students who have fulfilled the graduation requirements but wish to do a few extra modules can do so in which case,
    • they should not file for graduation or repeat modules which they have already obtained pass grades so as to improve their grades.
    • all modules will be counted towards the CAP and class of honors.
    • pay the semester fee.
    • read at least 15MCs of level 3000 or higher modules.

  • Can I read another Human Resource Module (HRM) in place of HR2002 Human Capital in Organizations?
HRM is a requirement of our engineering accreditation bodies. The faculty has discussed with the HRM unit and HR2002 is the recommended module.

  • Is there any limit on the number of level 1000 modules that engineering students can read in their entire candidature?

Students admitted in AY2006/2007 & Before
There is a specific number of level 1000 modules that students need to take under the Programme Requirements. However, students can take more level 1000 modules under ULR and UEM requirements.

Students admitted in AY2007/2008 & onwards
Students should not read more than 60MCs of level 1000 modules towards their degree requirements (minimum of 160 MCs for graduation).

FAQs about Special Programmes offered by Faculty of Engineering

  • How do I apply for the Double Degree Programme (DDP) with French Grandes Ecoles?
Admission to the French DDP is not just about being able to speak fluent French or a willingness to spend two years in France. All NUS French DDP students are carefully selected from among the 5% of their cohort in their respective Faculties/Schools and they undergo intensive technical preparatory classes in Mathematics and Physics prior to their studies in France. Basically, students in this Programme will spend their first 2 years in NUS and next 2 years in France. These students will then return to do their Masters degree in NUS. The whole process will take about 5.5-6 years. Selection begins right from Year 1. Eligible students will receive exclusive email invitation to attend French DDP talk during their Year 1 Sem 2. If you did not receive such invitation via the NUS email, you are probably not eligible for this programme.  For more information on this programme, please click here.

  • How do I apply for Double Degree Programmes in Engineering & Business Administration and Engineering & Economics? Please see this link for more information.

  • I need an acknowledgement letter to confirm my Industrial Attachment period.
Please contact Ms Eunice Loke ( englwp@nus.edu.sg )or tel 6516 6217 at the Office of Undergraduate Programmes Block EA, #04-10.

  • I'm interested to apply for SEP. Where do I apply?
Please visit the SEP website. If you have further queries, please see Ms Dawn Chia (engchiad@nus.edu.sg) or tel 6516 1659 at the Office of Undergraduate Programmes Block EA #04-10.

  • Are students on SEP allowed to use their modules taken to map against Breadth in NUS?
Yes, this is allowed. Please approach your department SEP coordinator for advice.

Other useful information

  • How many calculators can I bring into the examination hall?
Two calculators are allowed.  For more information on the use of electronic calculators during examinations, please see here.
  • I need a letter to verify that I am a student of NUS.
This document can be obtained from the Student Service Centre.

  • I would like to withdraw from the university. What is the procedure to do so?
  • Please see this link for more information.

  • What is the minimum CAP I have to maintain in order to stay in the Engineering programme? Please see this link for more information.

  • I received a letter of dismissal from Registrar's Office. How do I appeal to stay in the Engineering programme? Please see this link for more information.

  • I have completed FNA1002E Financial Accounting in the earlier semesters, and I intend to do a Minor in Business programme now. As FNA1002 is one of the modules in this programme and it does not carry an 'E' in the module code, can I use FNA1002E to fulfill the requirements for the Minor in Business programme.
According to the School of Business, you are allowed to count FNA1002E towards the fulfillment of the Minor in Business programme.
  • What is the effect on my grade if I missed an examination?
In case of absence from the examination, if the Board of Examiners decides to grant you special consideration, you will get an "IC" (Incomplete) grade but no modular credits for the module. IC grade will not affect your CAP. A module assigned an "IC" grade cannot be used to fulfill the prerequisite of a higher level module. You will have to retake (if it is essential) or replace the module in subsequent semesters. However, if the Board of Examiners does not grant you an IC grade, you will receive zero marks for your examination. You may still pass the module based on the merit of your CA if weightage of the CA component is high enough. Whatever grade you get will be factored into your CAP. Please note that the submission of a medical certificate and/or a Special Consideration form does not guarantee that an "IC" grade will be granted. Refer to the Exam Directory http://www.nus.edu.sg/registrar/event/examdir.html for further information on examinations.
