To conduct high quality research in
telecommunication systems and train suitable R&D manpower for the local telecommunications industry.

The ECE-I2R
Wireless Communications Laboratory houses postgraduate students
and provides services in wireless communication to the MSc specialisation,
jointly with the Institute for Infocomm Research, by conducting
RF laboratory classes. Research work within the laboratory includes design
and prototyping of systems in the areas of advanced modulation and
multiple access, signal processing, RF, antennas and propagation,
network protocols and Internet and mobile computing.
During the year the laboratory successfully completed
a research project, ‘Concatenated Sequences for Inter Base Station
Synchronisation in Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA)
Time Division Duplex (TDD) mode’, into how base stations in the
WCDMA TDD mode of communication are being synchronised. Research
on suitable codes for the synchronisation process found a concatenation
of m-sequences and Gold sequences.

Their autocorrelation and cross-correlation are a considerable
improvement on the auto-correlation and crosscorrelation of the codes
proposed by 3GPP (a third generation partnership project).
One of the challenges that the laboratory faces
is to provide for testing, simulation and verification of rapidly
evolving wireless technologies and systems. It is planned to further
build up the facility as a primary laboratory to conduct research
activities and projects within the ECE Department. At the same time
the culture of close research collaboration between faculty members
from the ECE Department and research staff
at I2R will be strengthened and further enhanced. |
