The Optical Crystal
Laboratory (OCL) is a joint laboratory between the Department of
Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Data Storage Institute
(DSI). The major facilities in this laboratory include various crystal
growth systems, crystal processing equipment and crystal property
characterisation equipment.
Currently, one of the major research activities
is to develop the LPE growth technique for magneto-optical (MO)
garnet films and the ACRT-flux growth technique for bulk MO garnet
crystals.
The Laboratory is also developing the CZ and Bridgman
growth techniques for various functional crystals for laser, communications
and data storage applications. Wide research areas related to nanocrystals,
crystal films and bulk crystals are provided to students under its
postgraduate programme with DSI.
An industrial attachment student is now involved
in the development of a dielectric property tester, and two Ph.D.
students are carrying out research on photorefractive crystals for
holographic recording and new MO crystal films for optical communication.
