Cheaper and higher performing audio and video
wireless products are to be developed jointly by the Faculty and the
Institute of Microelectronics (IME). Both institutions signed an
agreement on 11 January 2002 to collaborate on projects in
microelectronics.
One of the inaugurating projects is to explore
new materials for use in capacitors in integrated circuits through
the development of Metal-Insulator-Metal (MIM) Capacitor using
High-k Dielectrics. Another is in the design of radio frequency
integrated circuits.
Under the Memorandum of Understanding, IME
provides a research grant of S$250,000 a year, or a total of S$1
million for four years. In addition, both institutions can jointly
submit projects for additional funding from external organizations
such as A*STAR, and under the Nanoscience Initiative.
The set-up of a joint microelectronics 'virtual'
laboratory taps available resources, including staff, students and
facilities, from both IME and the ECE Department.
Prof Daniel Chan of the ECE Department said, "A
broad research collaboration between IME and ECE Department will
bring many benefits. It provides a very powerful synergy which will
be good for research in microelectronics. It will bring many
benefits to graduate students, academic staff and industry."
