NSTB Post-Doctoral Fellowship Programme

The Faculty of Engineering was formally established at the then University of Singapore in 1969. Prior to that, professional engineering education in Singapore began in 1956 in the Singapore campus of the University of Malaya.

Today, the Faculty has established high standards in teaching and research with many of its graduates now holding leadership and management positions. The Faculty contributes to Singapore's economy with a pool of engineers whose contributions in technology innovation have enabled Singapore to reach the status of an industrialized economy. While the primary task of the Faculty is to produce high-caliber manpower to meet the rapidly changing needs of our society, it also strives to achieve international eminence in focused areas of research and to realize the economic potential of its R&D capabilities.

The Faculty adopts an innovation-oriented philosophy of education. Its undergraduate curriculum strikes a balance between engineering fundamentals and applications, preparing graduates for both research and professional careers in the various engineering disciplines. The engineering curriculum was revamped in 1994/95 to implement a modular system of student assessment providing flexibility to students to study at their own pace.

Professor Low Teck Seng has been appointed Dean of Engineering from 8 Aug 98 for a period of three years. He takes over from Professor Andrew YC Nee, who has been Dean from 1995 to 1998. Prof. Low obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Southampton in 1982 and joined the Faculty in May 1983 and was promoted through various ranks to professorship in March 1998. He was the Director of the
Data Storage Institute (DSI), a national research institute, which he started in April 1992 as the Magnetics Technology Centre, prior to his appointment as Dean. The DSI is now 190 strong and will grow to 220 by 1999. He is presently the Deputy Chairman of the DSI Board.
