16th September 2016

Over two days, students participating in InnoVenture 2016 made visits to two wards to better understand the workings of the hospital and the problem statement at hand. The visit, held on 13th and 16th September was attended by representatives of six teams of students who are working on the National University Hospital (NUH) problem statement. It aimed to help familiarise students with the layout and setup of the wards in order to facilitate their problem-solving process.

The visit was conducted by Dr Goh Wei-Ping, Senior Resident Physician at the Division of Acute Care as well as Ms Teng Siew Tin and Mr Jensen Seah, staff from the Nursing Administration (Quality) department. The department is tasked with identifying ways of improving the quality and efficiency of nurses.

Students were brought to two wards, a subsidised ward and a non-subsidised ward. The wards were a hive of activity as nurses and doctors scurried around from cubicle to cubicle attending to patients. Mr Seah and Ms Teng explained the day-to-day routine of nurses. Nurse’s activities are classified into “direct” and “non-direct” tasks, where direct tasks involve patient interaction and non-direct tasks include for example, administrative tasks and preparing medication for patients. While the department had successfully increased the percentage of time nurses spend on direct tasks from 30% to 50%, it is looking to increase this by a further 10%.

This can only be done with by first tracking how much time nurses spend on a given task. This is currently done manually, by assigning a staff member to physically shadow a nurse for a day and recording the amount of time the nurse spends on a task. As Ms Teng explained, this is labour-intensive and can only be done infrequently. As such, Innoventure teams have been tasked with developing a system of tracking the amount of time nurses spend on a certain task to replace the current manual system. Already, technology has been implemented towards increasing efficiency in the wards. Dr Goh shared that NUH is the first hospital to go completely paperless, and all patient records are stored on portable workstations called “COW”, or computer on wheels which eliminate the need for hand-written records.

In this way, both nurses and patients benefit, as nurses are able to provide better care for the patients with the new technology. Following the eye-opening visit, the students busied themselves with coming up with possible solutions to the problem.

Explore Engineering – PSA International

10th October 2016

The towering quay cranes and hulking ships that appear the size of skyscrapers are just about visible in the distance from the National University of Singapore. Yet few students have had the opportunity to visit PSA Singapore Terminals (PSA ST). Four students had the chance to as part of the Explore Engineering series, which brings student participants of InnoVenture 2016 on visits to partner companies of the program.

Singapore is well known as a maritime hub contributing to some 7% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the port is one of its major contributors. It is the world’s biggest transshipment hub, where goods transit in Singapore to other parts of the world. At the heart of this complex operation are a series of terminals run by PSA. Behind the gates lie a world on its own, one buzzing with action 24/7 as cranes and trucks move around the busy ports serving the ships that call.

Our guide for the day at PSA ST’s Pasir Panjang Terminals was Ng Pi Rui, Deputy Manager of PSA unboXed, who gave the group an insider’s look into what goes on behind the scenes. Everything is carefully planned when it comes to container handling, right down to where each container should be placed depending on what is inside it and where it needs to go next. Each quay crane in operation requires 17 workers in various functions to achieve the productivity required and a vessel has around 3-5 quay cranes working on it.

Innovation is at the heart of PSA’s work in its bid to increase productivity and efficiency at the ports. For example, Pi Rui explained how PSA came up with double-stacked prime movers, in which two containers are stacked onto a truck. Two berths inaugurated as the “PSA Living Lab” have been dedicated to the testing of new technologies for the port and logistics industry, such as driverless trucks known as Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV). Aside from a tour of the wharf area and an explanation of port processes, the group also visited the Control Centre, where staff plan and monitor port operations using proprietary software developed by PSA.

In a continual effort to maintain and improve HSSE (Health, Safety, Security, Environment) standards at the port, InnoVenture students have been tasked to develop a system that can help to detect fatigue among prime mover drivers. The group sat down with Pi Rui and Elton Fong, Assistant Vice President of PSA unboXed, to discuss the issue; including various factors that may cause fatigue as well as measures already in place.

Following an insightful morning at the port, our teams got to work on finding possible solutions.

Business Bootcamp 2 picks up from the customer discovery and will focus on (financial) business concepts that are essential for successful product design. A product that merely adheres to the customer requirements, but is not within the financial means of the customer is a failed product. Furthermore, participants will get individual time with the company representatives for a first feedback round of their proposed solutions. Participants will tackle business questions such as:

  • What price should I be charging for my solution?
  • What is the unit margin of my solution?
  • What is the market size for my solution? Is it scalable?

InnoVenture 2016 is here!

1st bootcamp taking place on 20 Aug 2016!

What is InnoVenture?

InnoVenture is a competition for budding technopreneurs, to come together, form teams and challenge themselves to create innovative solutions that solve real world problems.

The competition is a way to experience what it takes to ideate, work with industry, lead teams, learn how to setup a viable business and literally get your hands (not just your brains!) active by prototyping real working solutions that create impact.

Participants are challenged to come up with feasible solutions for real problems. The set of skills required to solve these problems are diverse and broad, and encourage participants to form teams of 3-4 from multi-disciplinary and multi-graduate levels.

Top teams that create, design and disrupt will receive a prototyping grant provided by NUS to develop their concepts, and bring it to real life.

InnoVenture’s Goals

Goals are simple:
1) To transform classroom learning into real hands-on experience
2) To enable students to work on projects that solve real world needs
3) To build and nurture a supportive community that thinks, invents, and shares!

Experiential Learning. Cultivating Engineering Leadership

InnoVenture stands out from other (tech) entrepreneurs competitions worldwide in 2 ways.
1) It’s all about experiential learning – Participants participate in hands-on bootcamps and workshops, interact with entrepreneurs and industry, build prototypes and pitch their ideas.
2) The competition goes beyond a paper exercise. Participants are challenged to build real prototypes and ensure that the solutions are Customer Desirable, Technologically Feasible, AND Business Viable.
