The Engineering Mindset for Business Building & Disruption

Speaker: Mr Tan Tong Hai
CEO & Executive Director, StarHub

When: 8 Sept 2017
Where: NUS Engineering Auditorium
Start time: 600PM (Registration & tea reception)
Networking dinner will commence immediately after the event

Engineers are driven by curiosity. That engineering mindset affects how engineers approach any situation and frame ideas that they generate. It is this mindset that enable engineers to be real-world problem-solvers having tremendous impact on how the world works and evolve. What is perhaps less understood, is how that very mindset can be applied to build businesses and deal with the almost continuous disruptions that we face today.

Beyond immediate problem solving, engineers who see and understand the bigger picture, how an ecosystem functions, how people tick & knows what drives them, are leaders who can create value in areas other than in purely technical fields.

Mr Tan Tong Hai, is an example of such a leader. As a fresh graduate from NUS Engineering, he made a conscious choice to choose a position in the IT field that allowed him to explore new areas of development. Now as CEO & Executive Director of StarHub, that same engineering mindset of curiosity and the drive to create, is what he believes is necessary to be inculcated in today’s students to create the leaders for tomorrow.

Join us in this session where Mr Tan will share lessons from his leadership path, his current challenges, and how he believes the engineering mindset can be nurtured to help create value through business building, and to better deal with a disruptive environment.

About the Speaker

Tong Hai was appointed Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of StarHub on 1 March 2013. Abstract:
In recent months, there has been increasing urgency in efforts to push Singapore to transform itself in the face of global and technological disruptions. As Singapore diversifies and deepens its global connections & innovation networks, enterprises need to match this with skills to enable them to innovate and scale up, as well as be more pro-active in partnering each other & with others to create and capture opportunities.

SMEs are a critical component of Singapore’s plans to remain competitive. There have been numerous initiatives to help local enterprises scale up, be more productive and innovative. However, in light of such rapid global and technological disruptions, SMEs need to think & be global from the get-go, with or without government assistance.

10th Lecture of the IEL Distinguished Speaker Series

The 10th Lecture of the IEL Distinguished Speaker Series will be delivered by
Professor Richard J Parker, CBE, FREng
Director of Research and Technology, Rolls-Royce (retired)

Abstract:

When Ric Parker retired earlier this year, he was the longest serving CTO in the FTSE 100 Companies, with 15 years in the role and 37 years in the Company. This experience has given Ric time to reflect on what makes innovation successful (and why it sometimes fails). Why is innovation different from invention: invention is that flash of brilliance that leads to a vital new idea, captured in a patent, or technical publication; but innovation is the entire process of turning that idea into wealth creation, social benefit, or both. Ric’s own model for corporate innovation maps it into a Boston box with axes of  internal or external, closed or open. This model will be explored, looking at companies that have successfully employed each of the four possible approaches. What are the implications for corporate culture and employee behaviours that go with each of these. Singapore is an excellent micro-culture in which to explore these models, and Ric is currently advising A*STAR on how to effectively convert investment in technology into wealth creation for Singapore.

About Professor Richard J Parker, CBE, FREng

Recently retired, Richard (Ric) Parker was Director of Research & Technology, Rolls-Royce Group from January 2001 to March 2016. He was responsible for direction and co-ordination of Research & Technology programmes across all the Rolls-Royce businesses, worldwide. Ric joined Rolls-Royce in 1978.

Ric was awarded a CBE in the 2013 New Year’s Honours List for “Services to Engineering”. In 2014 he was voted European CTO (Chief Technology Officer) of the Year- 2014. In 2015 he was awarded the Royal Aeronautical Society Gold Medal.

Ric is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He is a Liveryman in the Worshipful Company of Engineers.

Ric gained a BSc in Physics at Imperial College, London in 1975 and an MBA with distinction at Loughborough University in 1992. He has Doctorates (honoris causa) from Pusan National University, Korea and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; and from Loughborough University, Sheffield University and Heriot Watt University, in the UK. He is a visiting Professor in Aerospace Technology at Loughborough University and an Honorary Professor in Materials Engineering at Birmingham University, UK.

Ric is married to Jenette, has two daughters, and has homes in Littleover, Derby and Nine Elms, London, UK.
