	Seminar: "New Innovation Strategy of Finland: Secrets of Finland" by Professor Pekka Neittaanmaki For more details please click here Date : Wednesday, 25 November 2009 Time : 10.00am ~ 11.00am Venue : NUS, Faculty of Engineering, Block EA, 06-04 Abstract: In this seminar, secrets of Finland will be unveiled. Similarity and disparity between Finland and Japan in their innovation system will be discussed. First, some statistical facts of Finland are outlined. Then, Finland’s new innovation strategy is introduced. Institutional factors of Finland’s economical success are identified thereon. 10 suggestive points underlining secrets of Finland include: (i) Small country (5.3 million population) neutral between east and west, (ii) Consensus based, political stability, challenge to the future, (iii) Good educational system from early childhood to university, (iv) Low hierarchy in public and private sectors, (v) Special language between Sweden and Russia, (vi) Hard working people, (vii) Trust, (viii) Political and economical difficulties, (ix) Sauna, and (x) Relaxed way of living. Similarity and disparity between Finland and Singapore with respect to innovation dynamism in both countries are expected to be identified through the seminar. No registration required. 	Goldfire for NUS Dear all, The Division of Engineering & Technology Management, Faculty of Engineering has purchased 5 licenses of the software known as the "Goldfire." These licenses allow use of the software by the whole NUS community (students and staff) for 1 year (1 Sept 2009 to 31 August 2010). It was purchased mainly for our MT5003 (Creativity and Innovation) and MT5003 (IP Management) classes, but FoE staff and students are most welcome to use it, especially those doing R&D. Goldfire allows systematic access of knowledge in various databases typically found in encyclopedias, patents, and scientific journals; and it allows you to apply the knowledge to solve problems and/or create new knowledge. It embodies the TRIZ process (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving). It stimulates creative thinking and speeds inventive problem solving. Goldfire is a unique innovation software platform that transforms ideas into possibly commercial products—generating and validating concepts and making innovation a sustainable process. Related to this, is http://www.kiva.org/ is an online community that facilitates micro-financing to entrepreneurs in developing countries. "Kiva in the last four years has distributed over $86 million in micro-loans to the working poor all over the world. It works with local micro-finance institutions, which have the specialist knowledge needed to identify suitable recipients, but don’t have enough money to help them. Kiva’s role is to persuade people to lend.
