    Master of Science in IP Management

     

     

    Overview and Motivation

     

    In today's knowledge economy, intellectual assets (such as technological information) are business assets that must be effectively managed in order to unlock their commercial potential for the sustained growth of technology-related businesses.

    The MSc in IP Mangement is a comprehensive inter-disciplinary post graduate programme in Intellectual Property which bridges law, technology, science, engineering and management. It is jointly offered by the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore and administered by the IP Academy, Singapore.

    The programme is the first of its kind in Singapore is targeted at mid to senior management professionals with a background in science, technology or engineering who wish to specialize in the management of IP in a technology related business.

    The teaching will be provided by a combination of academics, adjunct lecturers and by visiting local or overseas practitioners. Ths programme is jointly organised by the Faculties of Law and Engineering and jointly administered by the IP Academy, Singapore and Division of Engineering & Technology Management(D-ETM).


    Admission Requirements

      A candidate must normally have completed a Bachelor's Degree with 2nd Class Honours or its equivalent from a university with recognized standing. Candidates with relevant working experience are considered favorably.

    Curriculum and Graduation Requirements

     

    A full-time or part-time candidate for the degree of MSc in IP Management must successfully complete a program of study consisting of the following two key components:

    Part 1 - GCIP Programme: Intellectual Property Law (IP Law)
    Part 2 - MOT Programme: Management of Technology (MOT), 20 MCs(modular credits)

    For graduation, a student:

    • must obtain a GCIP (Pass) with a minimum average mark of 55%
    • must obtain a minimum CAP of 3.0 (B-) for the best MSc (MOT) modules equivalent to 20 MCs. Of the 20 MCs required, at least 16 MCs must be at a graduate level within the subject or in related disciplines and the remaining credits may be from other levels in the same or other disciplines subject to the approval of the Programme Manager.

    Students may be allowed to take more than 20 MCs only if at the point of request to take more modules, the student has less than 20 MCs or his CAP is less than 3.0. In general, all students are expected to graduate after obtaining 20 MCs and who have already achieved a CAP of at least 3.0.

     

    Continuation of Candidature

    Academic Warnings are issued to students if their CAP for the MOT Programme is less than 3.0.

    Students must complete their requirements for the degree within the maximum period of their candidature, failing which they will have their candidatures terminated.

     

    Modules

     

    Part 1 - IP Law: Completion of the GCIP programme with merit

    Candidates have to take all the modules in this list, which will be equivalent to 20 MCs. All these modules provide detailed coverage of the relevant laws of SIngapore. However, all these matters are placed in their international context and reference is made, as appropriate, to the comparable laws, in particular of the United States and the European Union and, selectively and where appropriate, with other countries if visiting speakers are available.

    Part 2 - MOT modules

    Students will have to complete a programme of study consisting of 20 MCs, selected from the following MOT modules (4 MCs each otherwise stated).


    • MT 5001: IP Management
    • MT 5002: Management of Industrial R&D
    • MT5003: Creativity and Innovation
    • MT 5006: Strategic and New Product Development OR
       IE 5211: New Product Management
    • MT5007 / BMA 5115: Managing of Technological Innovation
    • MT5008 / BMA 5404: Corporate Entrepreneurship
    • MT5009: Analyzing Hi-Technology Opportunities
    • MT5010: Technology Intelligence & IP Strategy
    • MT5011: Finance for Engineering & Technology Management
    • IE 5208: Systems Approach to Project Management
    • SDM5003: Knowledge Management
    • MT 5900: MOT Project (8 MCs)
    * Students are strongly encouraged to take MT5007 / BMA5117 before taking MT5900

    Subject to the approval of the Programme Manager for MSc (IP Mangement), students may be allowed to take up 4 MCs outside this list.

    Students who wish to take BMA modules from NUS Business School (as an elective outside the prescribed currciulum), please note that other than BMA5115 Management of Technological Innovation and BMA5108 Technopreneurship, there will be a module fee of $2,500 per 4MC module payable to NUS Business School. More details can be found HERE.

    Please also note that starting from 2007/2008, there will be no scholarships or tuition fee loans for new students in this programmes. Students will be expected to find their own means of funding.
