Faculty of Engineering

In line with the Singapore government’s efforts to attract world renowned educational institutions to establish a presence in Singapore, and NUS vision to achieve a world class reputation of excellence in education and research, the Faculty of Engineering (FoE) has adopted an outreach strategy towards attracting talent into its classrooms and labs.

To-date, the Faculty has links with tertiary institutions across four continents in 22 countries. Closer to home, activities have intensified – with the establishment of formal links with top institutions in China and India.

MOUs were signed with six Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai (Bombay), Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Guwahati and Chennai (Madras). These MOUs cover academic collaboration and student exchange. The first IIT exchange student from Bombay spent a semester with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in January 2004. Another 32 students from the various partner IITs enrolled in the subsequent intakes.

In China, an MOU was signed between Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering (CE) and our CE Department in March 2004. Contact was concurrently established with Xi’an Jiaotong, Zhejiang and Fudan Universities for possible collaboration in research, staff exchange and student talent recruitment. [See Photo Gallery]

The above links complement those already made with Tsinghua and Beijing Universities.

Apart from establishing academic ties in China and India, the Office of External & Industry Relations has successfully organized its first overseas engineering alumni gathering in Shanghai in March 2004. Some 30 alumni working, mostly in Shanghai, attended a dinner gathering at La Seine Restaurant in Shanghai hosted by Dean Seeram Ramakrishna.
