CORE Director (Research) Received IMarEST Institute Branch Award
Prof Y.S. Choo, Director (Research) of Centre for Offshore Research & Engineering (CORE) in NUS Faculty of Engineering received the 2004/2005 Institute Branch Award from Mr Keith Read, Chief Executive of the Institute of Marine Engineering Science & Technology (IMarEST) during the Annual Dinner of the Malaysian Joint Branch of RINA-IMarEST in Kuala Lumpur on 26 November 2005.
Prof Y.S. Choo receiving the award from Mr Keith Read, Chief Executive of IMarESTProf Choo received the best paper award for his paper “Development and Innovation of Tubular Connections for Offshore Structures” presented to the Singapore Joint Branch of RINA-IMarEST on 27 April 2005. The paper presented highlights of the R&D results on thick-walled tubular connections, and innovative reinforcement schemes for tubular joints and fabricated pipe trunnions. Prof Choo has implemented schemes for fabricated trunnions in major projects which have resulted in cost effective designs for heavy lift installation of offshore structures.
James Watt Medal 2005
CORE Director (Research) Prof Y S Choo and Mr J W Boh, together with Dr Luke Louca, Senior Lecturer of Imperial College (United Kingdom), were awarded the James Watt Medal by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in London on 25 October 2005. Their paper, “Response of profiled barriers subject to hydrocarbon explosions”, was published in October 2004 in the Proceedings of The Insitution of Civil Engineers: Structures & Buildings. This paper was judged as the best paper having a substantial energy content.
Prof Y S Choo and Mr J W Boh with selected results displayedThe paper presents a new approach to model the response and failure mechanism of stainless steel profiled barriers when subjected to blast loading generated from a hydrocarbon explosion. The reported results to determine the strength of deep trough corrugated blast-wall will provide a sound basis for design of barriers for safety of equipment and personnel on offshore production systems.
The research collaboration between the Centre for Offshore Research & Engineering (CORE) and the Department of Civil Engineering, Imperial College has produced notable results. Mr Boh was attached to Dr Louca’s group in Imperial College for 9 months. He was one of 5 recipients of the ISOPE Offshore Mechanics Scholarships awarded by the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE) in 2004. He has submitted his PhD thesis and is currently with WorleyParsons Singapore.
Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers
Prof C.M. Wang receiving the Fellow of IStructE Certificate from the IStructE President Michael Fordyce.
CORE Director Conferred Hononary Fellowship of Singapore Structural Steel Society
Prof Yoo-Sang Choo receiving the Hononary Fellowship Plaque from President of Singapore Structural Steel Society, Mr Leonard Soh
Prof Yoo-Sang Choo was conferred the Honorary Fellowship by the President of Singapore Structural Steel Society (SSSS), Mr Leonard Soh, on 30 August 2004 during the 20 th Anniversary Dinner of the SSSS. Prof Choo received the Fellowship in recognition of his technical expertise, outstanding contribution and development in Offshore and Structural Engineering.
Prof Choo is Director of the Centre for Offshore Research & Engineering (CORE) and is actively coordinating the research and development efforts in offshore engineering amongst CORE colleagues, the industry and government agencies (including Economic Development Board and Maritime & Port Authority).
Prof Choo served as the 4 th President of Singapore Structural Steel Society during the period of 1992 to 1994. He is currently theChairman for the Joint Branch of The Royal Institution of Naval Architects and The Institute of Marine Engineering Science & Technology in Singapore.
Prof Choo has received a number of international and national recognitions in recent years. These include two ISOPE Awards for his significant contributions to the International Society of Offshore & Polar Engineers. His research team also won the Stanley Gray Award for best paper in offshore technology presented by the Institute of Marine Engineering Science & Technology in 2001, and the Prestigious Engineering Achievement Award presented by the Institution of Engineers Singapore in 2003.
Prof Choo has served as technical consultant in major offshore projects, and participates in international joint industry projects.
