University graduates with at least a good honours degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering or related fields are invited to apply for research scholarships to pursue a Master of Engineering (MEng) degree or a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in one of the following:

  • Coastal & Offshore Engineering: Coastal Hydrodynamics and Marine Physical Processes, Sediment Transport, Coastal and Beach Erosion Control, Wave-Structure Interactions, Real-time Flow Forecasting, Water Resources Planning and Management, Water Quality, Heated Effluents and Oil Spill Modelling; Jackup Platforms and Floating Production Systems; Offshore Structures Under Extreme Loads; Very Large Floating Structures; LNG technologies; Subsea exploration;
  • Geotechnical Engineering: Underground construction and temporary earth retaining structures, including soil behaviour and ground stabilization; Hazards and protective geotechnics, including earthquakes, ground shock, blast effects and protective barriers; Offshore and coastal geotechnics, including offshore foundations, land reclamation, breakwaters and nearshore ground improvement; Soft Ground Engineering and Geosynthetics; Mineral and Earth Science
  • Infrastructure Systems & Management: Traffic, Highway and Airport Engineering; Transportation Logistics; Performance-based Asset Management; Construction Management; Complex Systems Engineering;
  • Structural Engineering: Composite Structures; Smart Structures and Structural Health Monitoring; Deployable and Tensioned Structures; Design of Infrastructures against Earthquake, Blast, Fire and Terrorism; Forensic Engineering; : Dynamics and Stability; Ferrocement and Fibre Reinforced Composites; FRP Reinforcement; Lightweight, High Strength and High Performance Structural Materials; Structural Appraisal, Retrofitting and Strengthening;

The research scholarship is available to full-time Ph.D and M.Eng. candidates on competitive basis, with priority given to Ph.D. candidates. The scholarship provides stipend of S$1,500 per month, plus waiver of research (tuition) fee which amounts to about S$400 per month. In addition, top-up of S$500 per month is given to Ph.D. students upon passing the qualifying examination and up to the end of third year of candidature. (S$1 is approximately US$0.63 as in May 2006.) No bond is imposed for scholarship (except when funded by the industry). The scholarship period is four years and two years for Ph.D and M.Eng students, respectively, subject to good performance in research and coursework. As part of the terms and conditions, research scholars are normally expected to assist in teaching-related duties (e.g. conduct of tutorial and laboratories, and grading of assignments) for up to 6 hours per week.
