Professor N E Shanmugam is currently with the Department of Civil Engineering, The national University of Singapore as Professor in Civil Engineering. He received his BE Degree in Civil Engineering in 1965 and MSc(Eng) in Structural Engineering in 1968 from the then College of Engineering, Guindy (University of Madras). After 10 years of teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in College of Engineering, Guindy and then in Delhi University he went to the University College, Cardiff (UK) where he worked on Design of Multi-cell Structures with special reference to ship double bottoms and obtained PhD degree in 1978 from the University of Wales. He taught in University of Wales and Polytechnic of Wales for three years before joining the National University of Singapore in December 1981.
Professor Shanmugam's research interest includes steel plated structures such as plate and box girders, ship double bottom structures, steel-concrete composite construction - long-span structures and connections, cold-formed steel structures, web openings in beams, elastic and ultimate load behaviour of steel structures etc. He is a co-recipient of George Stephenson Medal given by the institution of Civil Engineers, London for one of his papers published in their proceedings. He has published close to150 papers in international journals and conference proceedings, edited three conference proceedings and contributed two chapters for the Civil Engineering Handbook (CRC Press) and one chapter for Handbook of Structural Engineering (CRC Press). He is the Editor of the South and South East Asia Regional Issue of the Journal of Constructional Steel Research, and a member of the editorial boards of Journal of Constructional Steel Research, Journal of Thin-Walled Structures and Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics. He has organised in Singapore three International Conferences and sat as a member of the organising committee for a number international conferences and as International Advisory/Scientific Committee member of international conferences on steel structures.
Professor Shanmugam is a Chartered Engineer (CEng), Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers, London, (FIStructE), Royal Institution of Naval Architects (FRINA), American Society of Civil Engineers (FASCE), The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (FIES) and The Institution of Engineers, India (FIEI). He is a Member-at-Large of the Structural Stability Research Council (SSRC), USA. He is active professionally by providing advisory services and organising courses at basic and advanced levels on steel structures to practising engineers. He has been closely associated with the Singapore Structural Steel Society since its inception and served for several years in the Council as the First Vice-President, President and Immediate Past president. Professor Shanmugam is a Council Member of the Institution of Engineers, Singapore and is the Chairman of the IES/IStructE Joint Committee. He is serving in three Technical Committees as Chairman and Deputy Chairman in the Productivity Standards Board, Singapore and as a member of the Committee on Cold-Formed Steel Members, Structural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
