  Biography

KK Phoon is Director, Centre for Soft Ground Engineering in the Department of Civil Engineering, National University of Singapore. His current research interests include reliability-based foundation design, simulation of random processes, iterative finite element solution of 3D soil-structure problems, and seepage in unsaturated porous media. KK Phoon is the chair of the ASCE Geo-Institute technical committee on Risk Assessment and Management, Scientific Advisor to the International Centre for Geohazards (ICG), and member of the Board of Directors in Civil Engineering Risk and Reliability Association (CERRA).  He has participated actively on various editorial boards, conference advisory committees, and conference organization.  He has presented in 50 cities and 21 countries. He received the 2005 ASCE Norman medal for reliability-based design. The Norman medal is the oldest and most prestigious award bestowed upon "the author or authors of a paper that is judged worthy of special commendation for its merit as a contribution to engineering science."  KK Phoon is the founding editor-in-chief of Georisk, an international journal dedicated to Assessment and Management of Risk for Engineered Systems and Geohazards.  He was elected as Fellow of ASCE in June 2008.
