Biography

Professor C. G. Koh graduated with First Class Honours in 1979 from the then University of Singapore. Upon completion of his national service, he joined the NUS as a senior tutor in 1981. Subsequently, he went on a NUS overseas scholarship to further his graduate study at the University of California, Berkeley, where he obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. in 1983 and 1986, respectively. His Ph.D. thesis was entitled "Modelling of Dynamic Response of Elastomeric Isolation Bearings".

Since his senior-tutor days, Professor Koh's research interest has primarily been in structural dynamics, with applications on vibration isolation and control, system identification, nonlinear dynamic analysis, and experimental dynamics. To his credit, he has more than 140 international journal papers and conference papers and three invited book chapters. His papers have been well cited, with about 300 SCI-citations since 1993. He was promoted from senior lecturer-ship to become an associate professor in July 1998 and professor in Jan 2004. He served as a Sub-Dean of Engineering for two years and Deputy Head (Research) of the Department of Civil Engineering for five years. He subsequently served as the Vice Dean (Outreach) for one year and Vice Dean (Research) for two years in the Faculty of Engineering. He is currently the Director of the Faculty's Centre for Hazards Research.

Professor Koh is active in the professional and academic circle, serving in four journal editorial boards, including as an associate editor of a US-based journal on Structural Health Monitoring. He is also a registered professional engineer (civil) and has been engaged as an advisor/consultant in numerous projects including vibration analysis/measurement of many major infrastructure developments including close to vibration study of twenty high-tech projects in Singapore, Malaysia and China.
