Mission: Provide technical leadership to advance geotechnical engineering research, education, and practice for sustainable and responsible development. |
There is a broad consensus that the key challenge of the geo-profession in the new millennium is to provide innovative and sustainable solutions to increasingly complex infrastructural developments, while reducing risk and protecting both communities and the environment. Urbanization and concentration of population in mega-cities are clearly increasing on a global scale. For Singapore, the over-riding economic impetus to develop an enriching living environment is the competition for global talents and resources. Innovative concepts and enabling technology are needed to surmount severe space constraints and exploit meagre land resources in a socially and environmentally responsible way.
The Centre for Soft Ground Engineering (CSGE) was established in May 1991 as a research centre in the Department of Civil Engineering. Since its inception, the Centre has contributed significantly to national development through activities in land reclamation, ground improvement, deep excavation, tunneling, foundations, and geosynthetics. New inroads are made in visualization of underground space using GIS, protective technology, offshore geotechnics, and georisk. The Centre actively seeks local and international partnerships in academia, industry, government, and national/international agencies to further its mission.
