InnoVenture 2017: The Learning Journey to IdeaLaunch

(1 November 2017)

The journey for many InnoVenture teams concluded on the 1st of November 2017 as all of them went head to head in presenting their ideas at IdeaLaunch. Only a select few advanced to the second phase of the programme to receive prototyping grants.

Teams used a variety of interesting presentation styles. Many teams made prototypes to demonstrate how their idea would work, while others handed out informational pamphlets. Several teams also chose to use infographic videos and skits to show how their system would work.

However, just getting to IdeaLaunch was an achievement that should be celebrated. Although many clearly suffered the strain of the past weeks and the grilling they received during IdeaLaunch, they felt the experience was well worth what they had to put into the programme, and an excellent way for them to really “learn for real”.

This is what they had to say …

“I would recommend this competition for people that are passionate in engineering and entrepreneurship. You must be passionate in both.”
Shawn Lim, Year 2, Industrial Systems

“It was overwhelming because we needed a variety of skills, such as business, engineering and design. When we study, we only study our own major but for this competition we needed all these skills.”
Benjamin, Year 1, Computer Engineering

“The experience was not bad. I really learnt from it and this was a good platform to develop skills. Even though I didn’t feel the pitch went well, this was still a safe and controlled environment to help me grow.”
Qin Kai, Year 1, Computer Engineering

“The rigor of innovation is tough. It shouldn’t just be a good idea, it should always be done with the consideration of the user’s perspectives.”
Clement, Year 2, Biomedical Engineering

All the best to the teams proceeding on to the next stage. The clock is ticking to DemoDay March 2018!!

Let the games begin!

14 Oct 2017

The Business Workshop picks up from the customer discovery and will focus on (financial) business concepts that are essential for successful product design. A product that merely adheres to the customer requirements, but is not within the financial means of the customer is a failed product. The workshop is extremely hands-on as teams will be actively working together at the whiteboard while mentors are readily available to help you.

Participants will tackle business questions such as:

  • What price should I be charging for my solution?
  • What is the unit margin of my solution?
  • What is the market size for my solution? Is it scalable?

Facing the Design “Dragons” – InnoVenture Design Workshop

(16 September 2017)

InnoVenture, the technopreneurship competition organized by the Institute for Engineering Leadership at the National University of Singapore kicked off with students participating in the Maker Workshop held on the 9th September 2017.

Next in the exciting line up of workshops planned to help students design real practical solutions for real engineering problem statements, was the Design Workshop held on the 16th September 2017.

The main aim of the Design Workshop is to learn about design ideation and processes. Students were given helpful frameworks and tools to guide them in the design of their solutions. The session started with a bang, with videos of the show “Dragon’s Den” to showcase what kind of questions investors ask about design and customer fit. The students were guided in brainstorming effectively, asking the right questions and sketching their first solutions. They were pushed to further study the problem statement from different angles and to look for influences from various inputs, including similar solutions in the market and how to improve on them.

The workshop’s lead facilitator was Dr. Edwin Koh, a senior lecturer from the NUS Innovation and Design-Centric Programme with InnoVenture with members

During the many break-out sessions, the student split into their respective teams and dug into the real hands-on work in brainstorming, planning and sketching their ideas. Conceptualizing solutions to the problem statements proved to be quite challenging for the students. Luckily, the company representatives from InnoSparks, National University Hospital and PSA unboXed were present to help provide feedback and more detailed information regarding the problem statements they provided. This workshop is one of the most crucial stages in the competition as it kickstarts the planning and conceptualizing of solutions to the problem statements. The student teams were indeed fortunate to have so many experts in one room they could tap on!

Upcoming for the students are visits to the PSA terminal and NUH ward to better understand the respective work environments in which the solutions should fit. Students were welcome to sign up for any of these “Explore-Eng” visits, and really, who would not relish the opportunity to learn from real-life situations and not just in the classroom.

InnoVenture will resume on 14th of October for the Finance Workshop. Students have a lot to think about in the given time and we are sure that they will come back fresh and brimming with ideas for the next session!

All Hands on Board! – InnoVenture’s Maker Workshop

(9 September 2017)

By: Rennes Lee, Student Writer

Started in 2013, InnoVenture is the annual technopreneurship competition organized by the Institute for Engineering Leadership at the National University of Singapore. The competition tasks students to make use of both engineering and business knowledge to come up with real world solutions for real world problems faced by real companies. The skills needed to succeed in this competition are diverse and broad and hence attract a wide range of students from across the university. To make it even more exciting, the winners of the competition receive a prototyping grant to develop their concepts and bring it to real-life. The competition is split into 4 major workshops (Maker Workshop, Design Workshop, Business Workshop, How to Pitch) and 2 pitching events (Idea Launch and Demo Day).

This year the competition kicked off with the Maker Workshop on the 9th September 2017. InnoVenture is privileged to have InnoSparks, National University Hospital and PSA International as the problem statement providers this year.

The projects this year sure are challenging! InnoSparks for instance is looking for efficient solutions to help cool spaces, PSA is asking students to help provide solutions for signaling and preventing containers that are stacked out of sync on the container yard, while NUSH requires more efficient and cost-effective solutions to help turn patients who are bedridden and develop painful ulcers from inactivity. The students listened intently to the problem statements given by the company representative as the session provided invaluable industry insights to the participants for solutioning.

The challenge is to provide solutions that are feasible, desirable and viable and pitch the solution to the representatives at IdeaLaunch (Nov 2017). To help them in their creativity, the students had the opportunity to participate in practical workshops conducted by MakeDemy and NUS Hackers. The students were spoilt for choice as they had to make a quick decision of going for three out of the five available workshops to attend. The workshops ranged from 3D Modelling for Digital Fabrication, Introduction to Arduino, Soldering and Basic Electronics, Cardboard and Prototyping and Prototyping with Power Tools. All the workshops were hands on and interactive.

Aside from gaining new skills and knowledge the participants were able to meet and interact with other like-minded individuals from across the university, and from various graduate levels. The energy and enthusiasm by this year’s participants were palpable as they tried their best to complete the mini group projects they were assigned to do during the short amount of time they were given.

The workshops were an eye opener for many students and many saw this as an invaluable and important step to aid them on their journey. After the workshops, the students felt more confident in approaching the problem statements as they acquired many useful skills and knowledge.

The Maker Workshop kicked off the InnoVenture competition. In subsequent weeks the students will learn more about Design methods, Finances and Pitching to help them in solutioning and eventually coming up with a feasible, viable and desirable solution. Good luck to all our participants!

9 Sept 2017

Everyone can be a maker! The Maker Workshop aims to teach students how and when to use particular machinery and prototyping techniques. You will participate in hands-on workshops on 3D printing, wood working, creative drawing, Arduino etc. Learn the skills, practice them on the spot and apply them in your solutioning!

Furthermore, we will introduce the problem statements and provide you with simple frameworks that will help you to analyze the problem better from a customer perspective.
