Institute for Engineering Leadership

Centre for Technology & Innovation Management

CTIM

The Centre for Technology & Innovation Management develops interdisciplinary research topics in technology strategy and technological innovation opportunity creation. It conducts in-depth case studies of innovative technology development and strategic innovations for research and education.

The Centre will establish win-win collaborations both within NUS and with external organisations. The Centre works closely with the NUS Business School and NUS Division of Engineering & Technology Management. It will establish collaborative research with international parties - such as the Institute for Manufacturing of Cambridge University, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, the Tokyo Institute of Technology and Zhejiang University. The Centre welcomes other local and international research collaborations for mutual benefit.

Research areas within the Centre include:

Creating Disruptive Innovation for Emerging Markets

We collect disruptive innovation cases from emerging markets like China and India based on the theory of Disruptive Innovation (DI); develop a framework to select and cultivate potential DI; and develop R&D strategies to create DI in emerging markets.

Core team: Prof Hang Chang Chieh (D-ETM), Visiting Prof Elizabeth Garnsey (D-ETM & Cambridge University), Visiting Prof Ron Sanchez (D-ETM & Copenhagen Business School), Asst Prof Annapoornima Subramanian (D-ETM), Dr Ruan Yi (D-ETM), Ms Zhao Yangyang (D-ETM), Prof Chen Jin (Zhejiang University), Dr Ma Rufei (Tongji University), Dr Wang Yanmin (Beijing Normal University), Dr Qi Yu (Zhejiang University)

Open Innovation Strategy

We investigate the disruptive innovation cases from emerging economies to see how these firms, both large and small, use open innovation strategy; we examine how to incorporate open innovation strategies into national R&D plan.

Core team: Prof Hang Chang Chieh (D-ETM), Visiting Prof Wim Vanhaverbeke (D-ETM & Hasselt University (Belgium)), Asst Prof Annapoornima Subramanian (D-ETM), Dr Ruan Yi (D-ETM), Ms Zhao Yangyang (D-ETM)

IP Strategy for Disruptive Innovation

We collaborate with IPOS (Intellectual Property Office of Singapore) to build up local cases to be disseminated to industry and for supporting educational modules in IP Management; we also study how the competitive strategy of Non-Practicing Entities (NPEs) influences the patent market dynamics.

Core team: Assoc Prof Chai Kah Hin (D-ETM & ISE), Visiting Prof Liu Shang Jyh (D-ETM & National Jiao-Tung Univ), Mr Jack Cheng Yu-Chao (D-ETM), Dr Ruan Yi (D-ETM), Ms Anna Fong Hoi Yan (D-ETM)

Frugal Engineering

We redesign product development process and business models for 'good enough' products for emerging markets; send our students to India and China to learn the local demands, bridge the technology gap, and conduct translational R&D projects.

Core team: Prof Hang Chang Chieh (D-ETM), Prof Tham Ming Po (EDIC & D-ETM), Visiting Prof Luda Kopeikina (D-ETM), Asst Prof Annapoornima Subramanian (D-ETM), Dr Ruan Yi (D-ETM)

Technology Policy for Economic Development

We conduct research about the role of government in the evolvement of a disruptive innovation (e.g. E-bike) in China; we study the R&D policies and national innovation systems of other countries and propose policy suggestions to local authorities.

Core team: Prof Hang Chang Chieh (D-ETM), Prof Wong Poh Kam (BIZ & NEC), Visiting Prof Wim Vanhaverbeke (D-ETM & Hasselt University (Belgium)), Dr Ruan Yi (D-ETM), Ms Zhao Yangyang (D-ETM), Dr Wang Yanmin (Beijing Normal University)
