ECE Researcher Receives Singapore's Highest Honour in Science and Technology

Yeo Yee Chia of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering received the Singapore National Academy of Science’s (SNAS) Young Scientist Award 2006 for his work on nanoelectronics and semiconductor devices. Presented to young scientists aged 35
years and below with potential for world-class research, the award endorses the researchers' pioneering achievements. Dr Yeo’s research work contributed to the speed enhancement of electronic devices, and more particularly to the realization of nanoscale transistors with superior performance. Dr Yeo has achieved a world-first breakthrough by incorporating a new material comprising silicon and carbon in transistors to boost the speed of electronic devices. He also led a research team to develop transistors as small as 25 nanometers in size, and a new semiconductor that could potentially reduce power consumption in electronic devices. His team was also the first in the world to incorporate a new material comprising silicon and carbon in transistors to tweak the interatomic distance and the speed at which charge carriers move, thereby enabling electronics to operate at significantly higher speeds. This remarkable innovation has led to a large boost in the performance of electronic devices.

For his scientific excellence, leadership and dedication to inspire and empower youths, Dr Yeo has also been conferred the Singapore Youth Award 2006.
