National University of Singapore

NUS Division of Bioengineering

Introduction

Rapid advances in Bioengineering are opening up a new frontier and providing many opportunities. Bioengineering is also becoming a strategic area of development in Singapore. The National University of Singapore, together with National Research Institutes, has set up a NUS Division of Bioengineering to further advance the development of Bioengineering in Singapore. This Division has the support of the Ministry of Education, Economic Development Board and National Science and Technology Board.

Objectives

  • To launch an interdisciplinary education programme in Bioengineering.
  • To promote Bioengineering research and contribute to positioning Singapore as an international leader in the Biomedical Sciences.

Local & Overseas Collaborators

The NUS Bioengineering Programme is supported by various research centres and laboratories established at the University and is hosted by the Faculties of Engineering, Medicine, Science, Dentistry and the School of Computing. It also draws support from the National University Hospital and national research institutes such as the Johns Hopkins Singapore, Institute of Materials Research & Engineering, Institute of Molecular & Cell Biology, Kent Ridge Digital Laboratory and Institute of High Performance Computing, all of which are located within the university campus. This close proximity enhances the inter-disciplinary culture in research, learning and teaching. Strategic alliance is also being established with top bioengineering research institutes and universities in the US, Europe and Japan.

Education & Research Programmes

The NUS Division of Bioengineering aims to produce well-trained bioengineers who are conversant at the interface of engineering, information technology, physical sciences, and biomedical sciences. These graduates will be able to take opportunities offered by the Biomedical Sciences industries, hospitals, government, research and educational institutions. The education and research program is focused on the following research tracks:

  • Biopharmaceutical Engineering
  • Biomaterials
  • Biomedical Imaging
  • Biomolecular Engineering
  • Biosensors and Bioinstrumentation
  • Computational Bioengineering
  • Nano/Micro Biomechanics
  • Tissue Engineering

The NUS Bioengineering education programme has just recently launched the Minor in Bioengineering Programme for the engineering students. Efforts are underway to expand the Minor Programme for students in the Faculties of Science and Medicine. The other programmes currently being developed are:

  • Major in Bioengineering degree
  • M.Eng./M.Sc. in Bioengineering
  • Ph.D. in Bioengineering
